Into the Forest

Activity 1

After listening to the story can you create a Story map to re-tell the story to a parent?  Remember a story map uses images and key words to help you re-tell the story!  Click here to see an example of a story map for The Gingerbread man.

Activity 2

Listen to the story again and carefully look at images in the story, you may have to pause the recording to look carefully!  Can you see any images that are related to other traditional tales?   For example if there were to be a pumpkin on a page it would hint at Cinderella!   I would like you to make at least 1 book cover related to another traditional tale that is hidden in the stories images!  Be as creative as you like!

Activity 3

I hope you noticed that Anthony Browne used pencil drawings throughout the book.  After watching the story I would like you to use black/white paper to make a monochrome (black and white) picture of the little boy walking along a path in the story.  You can use newspapers, colour the  paper or whatever you have lying around – even a bin bag would look great as  a back drop!  The effect is added to by making the little boy very colourful so that he stands out against the black and white background.  Here is an example of what you could produce!  I look forward to seeing your amazing artwork!

Activity 4

Today I want you to focus on the art work within the book.  The pencil drawing on each page is very detailed!  So your challenge is to create a close up pencil/charcoal drawing of a tree.  This can be a real tree which you have in your garden or see on a walk or an image taken from the internet.  Look closely at the lines and use shading to add texture and definition! Here are some examples but I look forward to seeing what you can create!

Activity 5

Today we are going to get mapping! I want you to create a map for an imaginary forest.  You will need to create path ways, bridle tracks and  possibly add picnic sites, toilet blocks, patches of flowers and trees.  Remember to include a key so we know what each area is.  Here are some examples but as usual I bet you can create some even better ones!
